MILF poised to rescue abducted ICRC workers

MANILA, Philippines – The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) is poised to rescue three abducted International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) once it gets the opportunity, its spokesman said Friday.

MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu also warned the Abu Sayyaf it risk the wrath of the people of Mindanao if anything untoward happens to any of the hostages.

“Well I don’t want to talk about it on radio but definitely ang concern namin … very, very strong… kung may pagkakataon mag-rescue we will do it. Of course, consideration ang safety and security of the victims [I don’t want to talk about it on radio but definitely our concern is very strong. If there is an opportunity to rescue them we will do it. Of course, the main consideration is the safety and security of the victims],” Kabalu said in an interview on dzXL.

“Sana pangalagaan nila ang safety and security of the victims. That is paramount to everything else. Ang pera na hinihingi nila is only secondary. (Kung) magkaroon ng sakuna (o) madisgrasya ang victim magiging kaaway nila tao ng Mindanao,” he said

[They should ensure the safety and security of the victims. That is paramount to everything else, the money they are demanding is only secondary. If something happens to the victims, they become enemies of the entire Mindanao]

Kabalu said that even without authorization from the government, the MILF has been “closely monitoring” the situation of the three hostages.

He did not elaborate on this.

When asked if the MILF can talk to the Abu Sayyaf, Kabalu said, “we are ready and we are willing to do ang makakaya natin (whatever we can) for (their) early and safe release.”

On the other hand, he said there are doubts surrounding the capability of former Moro National Liberation Front chairman and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Nur Misuari to negotiate for the hostages’ release.

“Hindi nakuha ni Nur ang cooperation ng local and even military on the ground (He has yet to secure the cooperation of local officials and even the military on the ground),” he said.

The Abu Sayyaf abducted three ICRC workers in Sulu last Jan. 15, and had threatened to behead the hostages if the military did not pull out its forces from the area.
