Task force chief in ICRC crisis returns

MANILA, Philippines — Major General Juancho Sabban has reassumed his post as chief of Task Force Comet pursuing Abu Sayyaf kidnappers still holding captive two foreign Red Cross workers, a spokesman said.

Sabban came back to the country and returned to his post on Good Friday, said Lieutenant Colonel Edgard Arevalo from the Jolo-based hostage crisis team.

Sabban’s return has overriden talk that he was relieved from his post following accusations by Senator Richard Gordon, chairman of the Philippine National Red Cross, that he subverted efforts for the safe release of one of the hostages held in the Indanan forest in Jolo.

He went on an “official business” two-week leave on March 25 to keynote a Colombia seminar on security, set from March 28 to April 2, upon the invitation of the Colombian government and the US Armed Forces Southern Command, said Arevalo.

Filipino Mary Jean Lacaba has been released by the Abu Sayyaf but they are still holding Swiss Andreas Notter and Italian Eugenio Vagni.
